Double feature wins for Todd Jackson on
Parsons Peformance Parts Night
July 30th RACE REPORT
by Lucas Punkari
Sunny skies greeted
drivers and fans on Friday night at the
Kinross Speedpark, as Parsons Performance
Parts sponsored the evening’s 4-in-1 show.
The fast qualifiers remained the same as
they have been for most of the season, with
Taylor Babcock in Four Cylinders, Bill
Cryderman in the Pure Stocks, Todd Jackson
in both the Factory Stocks and Modifieds.
Racing action started with the dashes, with
John Clawson winning in the Modifieds, Barry
Glenn-Gokee in Four Cylinders. Paul Fox
edged out Mark Beaudoin in a photo finish in
the Factory Stocks while Billy Cryderman
passed Randy Touchstone on the final lap to
take the win in the Pure Stocks.
Next up were the Australian Pursuits, where
in the Modifieds Rick Ellis passed both Ron
and Don Etcher to take the lead and the win.
The Four Cylinder race saw Barry Glenn-Gokee
make a three-wide pass on BJ Marcoux and
Tony Rankin to take the lead, and he would
then hold off Chelsea Pace and Taylor
Babcock for the win. Todd Jackson made a
great pass on the inside of Paul Fox in
turns three and four on the final lap to
take the Factory Stock win, while in the
Pure Stocks John Clancy led flag-to-flag for
the win.
The Modifieds were out next for their heat
races, where in heat one Rick Ellis held off
the late charges of Don Etcher to take the
win, while in heat two John Clawson picked
up the win. Barry Glenn-Gokee looked to have
things well in hand in Four Cylinders heat,
but on the final lap he suffered mechanical
issue in turns one and two, handing Tony
Rankin the win. Larry Young Jr. won with
ease in the Factory Stocks and he almost
bagged a win in the Pure Stock heat race,
only to be edged out by John Clancy.
Following intermission it was time for the
features, with Ron and Don Etcher occupying
the front row for the 30 lap Modified main
event. At the green, Ron moved out into an
early lead, but he would soon be passed by
Rick Ellis on lap two. Once in front, Ellis
was protecting the inside line, which forced
second place Keith McBee to use the high
side if he wanted the lead. The first
caution of the feature came out on lap
three, when Earl Myles suffered a flat right
front tire on his car, and as result he
slowed to a stop coming out of turn four.
On the restart, James Brown passed McBee for
second, and he began to look to the outside
of Ellis for the lead. As they battled for
the top spot, John Clawson and Todd Jackson
were working their way through the field, as
they both passed McBee for the third spot on
lap nine. Jackson would then power by both
Clawson and Brown to move into the second
spot on lap eleven, and just two laps later
he drove past Ellis to take the lead.
Once in front Jackson pulled away as Ellis
and Clawson ran side by side for second.
Further back in the pack, McBee spun out in
turn three, to bring out the caution on lap
thirteen. At the green, Jackson got a great
jump on the field, while Clawson took the
second spot away from Ellis just as the race
reached its halfway point. Dennis Uhlman was
now making his way through the field, as he
rocketed by Brown for fourth and would then
take the third spot from Ellis a lap later.
The front three started to pull away, as a
six-car battle began to develop for the
fourth position. That battle would come to a
dramatic end with ten laps to go when Brown
pushed high coming out of turn four, slid
back down the track and into the right rear
of Bill Bond’s car. The impact sent Bond’s
car into the air for a brief moment, and
caused damage that would mark the end of the
night for both drivers.
When the race resumed, the front three once
again pulled away from the back, as they
were right on each other’s bumpers as laps
wound down. In the end though, no one would
have anything for Jackson as he took home
his third feature win of the season.
Clawson, Uhlman, Mike Weeman and Ellis
rounded out the top five.
In the Pure Stock feature, Josh Clancy and
Randy Touchtone occupied the front row, but
at the green it was Larry Young Jr. who
rocketed to the front. Behind him, Bill
Cryderman worked his way through the pack,
and by lap four he was battling Young Jr.
for the win. After a two-lap battle,
Cryderman moved into the top spot, and
started to pull away from the back. Young
Jr. kept things close, but in the end
Cryderman was gone as he took the win. Young
Jr., Clancy and Touchstone rounded out the
field.
Koltyn Hubble and BJ Marcoux led the field
to the green in the Four Cylinder feature,
and the two drivers would swap the lead in
the first couple of laps before Marcoux
edged out in front. Chelsea Pace would then
work to the high side on lap three to take
the lead away, but Marcoux would power back
in front at the end of lap number four.
Those two would continue to trade the top
spot, but behind them Taylor Babcock was
catching the leaders at a quick rate.
The three youngsters would race together for
the lead for a couple of laps, before Pace
took the lead on lap eight, with Babcock
moving into second a lap later. Soon after,
Babcock would make her move to the inside of
Pace for the lead, which she would
eventually take on lap 12. Once in front,
Babcock steadily pulled away as she would go
on to take her third straight feature win,
with Pace, Marcoux, Scott Norman and Tony
Rankin the top five.
The final feature of the night was in the
Factory Stocks, where Chris Jones had the
pole. The race was not even a half lap old
when the first yellow flag, as a result of
contact between Jones and Josh Maitland,
which sent the entire field scattering and
sliding all over the backstretch as they
tried to avoid Maitland’s spinning car.
On the complete restart, Larry Young Jr. was
now alongside Jones, and he would seize the
opportunity as he jumped into the lead.
Young Jr. had opened up a sizeable lead, but
that would soon disappear on lap five, when
Jones and Maitland got together once again
in turn one to bring out another caution. At
the green, Young Jr. pulled away once again,
as Mike Fox and Todd Jackson battled for the
second spot.
Jackson would take the spot from Fox on lap
seven, and would soon begin to work over
Young Jr. for the lead. The front two were
side-by-side when the race reached the
halfway point, but a lap later Jackson
pushed to hard entering turn one, and as a
result Young Jr. edged back in front. With
five laps to go, Jackson again went to the
outside for the lead, but Young Jr. was able
to power out of the corners more
successfully as he held onto the lead.
That scenario repeated itself until the
final lap of the race, when Jackson
dive-bombed into the final two corners for
one last shot at the lead. The two drivers
were side-by-side as they exited turn four,
and as they reached the finish line, it
would be Jackson edging out Young Jr. by
only a couple of inches. Fox, Jones and
Maitland would complete the rest of the top
five.
